Speeches

Today Pohutukawa Syndicate had its annual speech competition. Three members from Team 15 competed against the other Year Four classes with two placing in the top three. Congratulations to Sarah, Lawrence and Brooke. Here is a picture of the winners.

All members of Team 15 presented speeches and some of us wanted to share them. They all did a fantastic job and I was thoroughly impressed. You can see them below.

Whale Paintings

We have created some more amazing whale art.

First we experimented with blending acrylic paints to make an ocean background. We also used different brush strokes to create different textures.

Once it had dried, we used crayons to draw our whale silhouettes. We also used them to add some shadows and detail.

Pop in to have a look at them in the flesh.

Whale Silhouette Art

We have created some cool artwork based on the illustrations from 'Lost and Found' written by Oliver Jeffers.

Our silhouettes are a birds eye view of some whales migrating in a super pod. I wonder where they are migrating to?

Whale Writing

We have been writing all about whales.

Here are some excerpts from three of our students. Pop on in to read the rest.

Whales
Whales are LONG creatures and are way bigger than dolphins. Now here is an idea about how long a whale is; an orca is bigger than an elephant! They have 4 limbs (2 in their tail and one in each flipper). Beneath their skin is a fat called blubber. Seals and Seal Lions also have blubber.
DIET:
A whale’s diet depends on whether you are a toothed whale, or if you are a baleen whale. If you are a toothed whale you eat squid, seals, sea lions and blue whales. If you are a baleen whale you eat krill shrimp and…
plankton.
POPULATION:
Varies with every species. I don’t know what a single whale’s population is, apart from a few dolphins population, so ask a scientist who studies whales.
MH
Killer Whales
The Killer Whale is black and white. It kills sharks and it has a blowhole. Its fin looks like a sharks fin and it has a white eye. It likes to chase sea turtles and its really fast, in fact, even faster than a human. They can also defend themselves against sharks and other kinds of dangerous icy water animals.
FM
Blue Whales
The Blue Whale has a pleated throat, a giant tail and an enormous mouth. If feels a bit wet, touchy and soft. The Blue Whale looks like an enormous sea sausage. Its eyes are the size of grape fruit. It has a blowhole. With its tail, it can kill a Toothed Whale like the Orca. Its baleen looks like a big bunch of hair. Its tongue is big and fleshy. Its the biggest thing on Earth. If you just read that, now you know about the Blue Whale.
